The Big Apple is taking a bite out of AI-powered wellness experiences in lavish, members-only clubs

High-earning New Yorkers are expected to look increasingly well-rested, full of vitality and overall centered this summer as wellness brand Continuum opens its flagship location in New York City’s Greenwich Village, adding to the health and wellness landscape of the Big Apple.

Opening its doors in May, Continuum Club has a waitlist for those hoping to receive its white glove service and hyper-personalized offerings, including one-on-one personal training sessions, massages, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Himalayan salt saunas, cold plunge treatments, spacious workout zone and lounge areas. 

The “intentionally exclusive” club was leased through September 2032, occupying a 25,000 square-foot space that was once home to David Barton Gym and, most recently, Peloton’s Tread Studio, according to The Real Deal. 

Behind Continuum is its CEO and president Jeff Halevy, a former fitness tech entrepreneur and NBC’s “The Today Show” health correspondent.

AI-Infused Wellness

Unlike other luxury wellness clubs, the members-only Continuum is infusing advanced technology within its space, leveraging what Halevy says are “the most comprehensive physiological data sets, deep learning, and an expert team providing vertically integrated services” to deliver “ideal total wellness.”

Continuum Club clients receive a “bespoke wellness prescription” that the wellness company says is curated by its expert personnel and biometrically informed AI, which will adapt and adjust its recommendations over time. 

“Our club in Greenwich Village was meticulously curated to both house the leading technology and services in the wellness space and to do so in a cohesive, intentional, luxury environment,” said Continuum’s Chief Revenue Officer Tom Wingert, a former marketing executive from Lululemon. “We’ve brought an extraordinary team of NYC-based artisans together to create a sanctuary in the heart of the city that celebrates the heritage of the neighborhood and deeply incorporates nature in a way that encourages serenity amidst busy city life. The space is truly one of one.”

Although Continuum plans to expand its physical presence by establishing new clubs, the luxury brand will roll out its AI-driven wellness app beyond its club locations so users can experience biometric analysis and personalized prescriptions wherever they are.

Wellness at Every Corner 

The post-pandemic era certainly has resulted in a wellness boom in NYC. While Continuum plans to serve the Greenwich Village elite, Remedy Place, a social wellness club, opened in the Flatiron neighborhood in 2022.

Founded by Dr. Jonathan Leary, the “temptation and toxin-free” environment offers functional medicine, chiropractic movement, acupuncture, cupping, ice baths, infrared saunas and vitamin IV drips with an emphasis on socialization. Remedy Place also offers three different membership tiers, ranging from $350/month to $2,250/month, each offering guest passes. The wellness club also has a location in West Hollywood, California.

Also located in Flatiron is The Well, offering quarterly memberships for access to its social wellness experience that includes massage and skin health services, vitamin therapy, yoga and movement, Chinese medicine and acupuncture, vibrational energy healing and health coaching. Private events can also be booked at The Well, for corporate outings or a staycation. The Well also recently broke ground on The Well Bay Harbor Island, a wellness-focused condo and office space in Miami that rivals luxury residential concepts like Life Time Living.

While The Remedy Place and The Well offer club-level memberships, non-members can also experience a luxurious wellness session by booking a service of their choice, or head to one of NYC’s many communal bathhouses that have become all the rage.

The social wellness club has introduced the Remedy Roller, an automated full-body massage device with infrared light and voice-guided treatments

Remedy Place, the social wellness club, is now bringing self-care to homes. Today, the club launched its Tech-Remedy Collection, starting with the Remedy Roller, an automated full-body massage device.

Remedy Place pioneered the term “Social Self-Care,” catching the attention of entrepreneurs, celebrities, and professional athletes in New York City and Los Angeles since its founding in 2019 by Dr. Jonathan Leary. Now, the wellness club is taking its mission of making the world feel better into homes with the Tech-Remedy Collection, starting with the Remedy Roller. 

“The decision to introduce the Remedy Roller as our first product launch stemmed from our desire to extend our experiences beyond the confines of our physical clubs,” Leary told Athletech News. “Recognizing the impossibility of being physically present everywhere, we conceived the Tech-Remedy Collection as a means to reach a broader audience and further our mission of making people feel better.”

The Remedy Roller, the first product in the Tech-Remedy Collection, is an automated full-body massage device that empowers individuals to administer myofascial release, alleviate muscle tightness and enhance connective tissue health. It increases blood flow and improves range of motion. It also offers a full-body lymphatic massage experience, a bidirectional drum system massage, infrared light therapy, and voice-guided treatments. The roller is also crafted from 100% natural beach wood balusters and comes with different speed settings for customization.

Remedy Place Expands Exec Team

The announcement comes on the heels of Remedy Place appointing Stephen Wright as its inaugural vice president of marketing. Formerly managing director at Azione PR for around eight years, Wright has experience with both emerging and established brands, including Boy Smells, Equinox, Heyday, Moon Juice, Sakara Life, Sweetgreen, Thrive Market, West Elm and more.

Remedy has big plans for the future, including physical expansion and new products and services.

The founder of Remedy Place spoke with Athletech News about his newest venture, Remedy rooms, an upcoming line of at-home wellness products

Dr. Jonathan Leary created Remedy Place, a social wellness club, to curate a community of like-minded individuals who want to replace some of their social outings with self-care. Remedy Place, which started in California and recently expanded to New York City, distinguishes itself by promoting the concept of social self-care, which has traditionally been an individualized pursuit.

The social wellness club has been frequented by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kacey Musgraves and Shaun White. With offerings like ice baths, infrared saunas, lymphatic compression and Chinese medicine, Remedy Place promises, “You will always leave feeling better than when you walked in.”

Dr. Leary, who has a doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine and Alternative Medicine, uses his background in integrative medicine, psychology and holistic therapies to influence Remedy Place’s development. The club’s impact extends beyond its walls, as it provides wellness services at major events, partners with private clubs and hotels, and aims to educate alternative medicine doctors and health professionals about self-care and preventive care.

Despite Remedy Place’s success, Dr. Leary realized that many of his high-profile clients wanted Remedy Place’s offerings without leaving the privacy of their own homes. That inspired his upcoming new venture, Remedy rooms, a line of at-home wellness products designed to recreate the Remedy Place experience in people’s homes.

Dr. Leary spoke with Athletech News about the surging trend of at-home wellness technology, the evolving landscape of self-care and why Remedy Place’s new venture is launching at the perfect time for the industry.

Athletech News: Why is at-home wellness becoming so popular?

Dr. Jonathan Leary: Through the pandemic, at-home fitness became the biggest thing. It made sense why fitness had to be at home. But I do think that fitness, outside of the times when it has to be conveniently at home, is something that you should probably be out and about (while doing). Human connection is a major part of the healing process, and most people establish another community of people in their life through their gym.

But when it comes to self-care or major recovery activities, convenience is important. Most people don’t have access to self-care and recovery places like Remedy. Awareness of the space has drastically shifted, and people want to feel good. Being able to add that to homes is really important. For people with the means, convenience and maximizing every minute of the day is crucial.

We work with a lot of celebrities and high-profile people who either don’t have time or are too high-profile to come into Remedy every day. It’s nice to be able to do self-care in the comfort of your own home. That’s why we decided to create a Remedy line and collection that matches the high-level design of Remedy, partnering with top technology and enhancing it with our design. Now we’re able to offer it for homes or commercial places.

ATN: What products make up the new line? 

JL: We have a hyperbaric chamber, a cold plunge, a sauna, a lymphatic massage device, an automatic foam roller called the Remedy Roller and cryotherapy.

ATN: How is this new venture an extension of Remedy’s mission? 

JL: Our mission is to make people feel better through self-care and human connection. We’re making Remedy rooms, which is our mini version of Remedy for people’s homes. It’s not just about selling the technology; it’s about creating a space for routine and entertainment. People can have guests over and enjoy the Remedy room together, bonding over self-care. It’s a way to enhance relationships and make self-care a priority in people’s lives. It’s an extension of Remedy Place.

ATN: What challenges and opportunities do you foresee with Remedy rooms?

JL: In the short term, the demand is high, but there are limited products in the market. In terms of competitors, some products are not good or safe. Our biggest hurdle is making it more affordable while keeping it safe. Future competitors who prioritize business and margins over safety are a concern. We want to protect the industry and ensure credibility. The self-care industry is growing, and I believe it will be bigger than the fitness industry. If we can be the leading source of truth, provide real education, ensure safety protocols, and raise awareness, we can protect and legitimize the industry.

ATN: How are Remedy rooms set up in a home? 

JL: We’ve sold some of the technology independently, but we’re now making plans to set up fully functional Remedy rooms. We’re working with developers to incorporate Remedy rooms into homes. We have the technology accounted for and ready to go, and we’re in the early stages of setting up Remedy rooms. People can choose to buy just the technology or opt for a full Remedy room with the design and plans for their contractor to set it up. 

ATN: What’s contributing to the growth of the self-care industry in general? 

JL: Awareness has shifted and people realize the importance of taking care of their bodies. Life is precious and self-care is crucial for overall well-being. The industry is just getting started and it has the potential to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

Ice baths have taken the wellness world by storm. Is the discomfort worth it?

Ice baths have become a popular practice among the health-conscious, with everyone from LeBron James to Kim Kardashian taking the plunge. Cold plunges involve immersing oneself in water often under 40 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 to 5 minutes. While not comfortable, cold plunges have been found to offer a range of benefits for both physical and mental health.

One of the primary benefits of cold-water exposure is its ability to reduce inflammation in the body. When the body is exposed to the water, blood vessels constrict, which can reduce swelling and inflammation after intense workouts. Plunges have also been found to boost circulation and improve cardiovascular health. The sudden exposure to cold water can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, increasing heart rate and blood flow throughout the body. This can help to improve oxygenation of the muscles and organs and may even lead to better mental clarity and focus, as well as stronger hair and skin.

In addition to physical benefits, cold plunges have been found to improve mental health and resilience. Cold exposure has been shown to activate the release of endorphins to reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall feelings of well-being. Studies have also suggested that cold exposure can support better sleep quality.

Contrast therapy, or going from a sauna to an ice bath, can have even more physical and mental health benefits. However, it’s recommended to approach this practice with caution, as immersing oneself in such contrasting temperatures can be stressful on the body, particularly if done too frequently or for too long.

Remedy Place, a social wellness club founded by Dr. Jonathan Leary, just opened a state-of-the-art flagship location in Flatiron. On September 9, Remedy Place launched its first NYC location, a 7,200 square foot flagship location in Flatiron, at 12 W 21st Street. With soothing, monochromatic color schemes and customized lighting, Remedy Place’s new location was built with attention to detail about all aspects of its members’ experience. Even the entrance to the space has the ambience of an inviting yet luxurious kitchen, complete with raw snacks, bone broths, and electrolyte-infused waters. Its founder, Dr. Leary, explained, “We really wanted to make our members feel at home here—like they could help themselves to something from their kitchen.”

Dr. Jonathan Leary, who has a doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine and Alternative Medicine began as a concierge doctor in Los Angeles almost ten years ago, during which he developed the business plan for Remedy Place. With an interest in a non-surgical, non-drug approach to surgery prevention and pain rehabilitation, he began working with professional athletes, artists, and industry leaders to develop customized wellness plans. Remedy Place grew from his desire to bring his wellness practices to more people in a social capacity. In the early days of his practice, Dr. Leary figured out that his job was to help facilitate, teach, and support his patients to take full control of their health, which often required a lot of lifestyle changes. Dr. Leary reflected, “They would always say, ‘Dr. Leary, X, Y, and Z are all gone and I feel incredible, but these lifestyle changes are really affecting my social life.’ No matter what they did…date, travel work, events etc. they were always surrounded by temptation and toxins. So, I wanted to create a club that was temptation and toxin-free that enhanced their health and social life at the same time.”

Remedy Place NYC offers “remedies” such as functional medicine, chiropractic movement, and acupuncture and cupping. In its sleek ice bath studio, members can take ice bath classes, with holotropic breathwork followed by submersion in 38 degrees Fahrenheit water. The private infrared sauna suite was custom-made to allow members to personalize their heat settings—even if the person next to them has a different preferred temperature. The private contrast suite includes both an infrared sauna and double ice baths—perfect for events ranging from group outings to intimate date nights. Every detail was considered in the construction of the space: in the Vitamin IV-drip couch areas, curtains can be drawn or opened for larger parties, intimidate date nights, and individual experiences. There are even large spaces available for self-care movie nights—enhanced by wellness offerings like acupuncture.

Members can also take advantage of Functional Remedy Testing, where practitioners conduct bloodwork and, in some cases, stool testing to determine an ideal personalized approach to their wellness. With on-site team members in naturopathic medicine, movement, Chinese medicine, and chiropractic and acupuncture services, Remedy Place has a variety of customizable offerings for different bodies. Dr. Leary stated, “Functional medicine is truly the future of healthcare. No more guessing, no more band aids—this tells us everything we need to know and gives us an internal guide to our body. Compared to the California location, which is 4,000 square feet, Remedy Place NYC is larger and includes new features like a red light suite. The space is also more ergonomically designed, with thoughtful details that allow members to improve posture, reduce pain, and relax. 

Remedy Place’s new NYC location is just the beginning. With plans to bring social wellness clubs to new locations in the coming years, Remedy Place is looking to redefine wellness through both combating loneliness, and focusing on holistic offerings. One such wellness club is Remedy Place, which started in California and is soon expanding to New York City. It was founded by Dr. Jonathan Leary, who has a doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine and Alternative Medicine. Athletech News (ATN): Why do you think the popularity of dedicated rest and recovery spaces has increased?

Dr. Jonathan Leary (JL): Awareness has drastically increased. The overall rise of seeing it on social media, the want and the curiosity of optimizing the human body as well as the influence of seeing pro-athletes do it, have all played a major role in the growth of this new industry. 

From a healthcare perspective, over the past couple of decades, we’ve been pushing people to become more active or start exercising. Now, a majority of people do a form of exercise and many are training their bodies the same if not more than some of my pro-athlete clients. However, what they don’t see is that most athletes recover more than they train. Exercise is a stress on the body, a good stress (most of the time), but still a stress. In order to enhance performance and look and feel better, we have to offset this stress with some form of self-care (recovery).

I have been saying this for a long time, but recovery/self-care is going to become evenly as big or bigger than the fitness industry. Just based on pure science, this is a huge missing puzzle piece in most people’s regimen and in my professional opinion is a must. 

ATN: How have you seen growth evolve in the last few years?

JL: I have been seeing an upward trend of preventive and holistic care for the past seven years. Prior to social media, there was minimal exposure to most of these treatments. Unlike big pharma, it was near impossible (due to lack of money) to market treatments like meditation, acupuncture, chiropractic, etc and the only way people would hear about it was word of mouth. However, now you can simply post a video online and it can receive tens of millions of views. The awareness and positive testimonials show that all of these modalities work are not only making people inquisitive to try them but also are also making people ask questions. I feel as though people are finally understanding that lifestyle changes are a must to get to the root cause of their health problems.

Furthermore, with the pandemic, I believe it was the first time globally that people saw the impact of a virus on humanity and how it impacted those who were more unhealthy. Although this was a huge tragedy, it was also a wake-up call for most people to start prioritizing taking care of themselves. With that being said, my prediction of the rise of self-care and alternative medicine was drastically altered and is pushing the industry forward much faster than I could have ever imagined.

ATN: What are some of the most popular Remedy Place services

JL: Our alternative medicine doctors. From functional medicine, acupuncture and cupping, to our signature chiropractic movement sessions that blend adjustments, active release therapy and fascial manipulation, they are always booked up. 

All of our technology-based treatments are also a huge hit. Every month we get busier, and it is incredible to watch the increased frequency of usage of the club for each one of our guests. It is truly becoming part of their day-to-day regimen!  

ATN: How do most members use their membership–how often do they come, what drives the most value for them, and how do you see their memberships evolve? Do they become more involved over time?

JL: Unlike a gym membership, our guests use their membership to the full extent and more! Some members come every day, but our average member comes 2-3 times per week. 

We are a fully inclusive club, but to give some form of exclusivity, we created a select amount of memberships per club. West Hollywood, for example, only has 200 spots and our new NYC location will have 300. Based on the membership they choose, they are getting a significant amount of savings and that is our thank you for being a member. Our goal is to curate an amazing group of like-minded people that lead by example and are contributing something positive to the world.

With the Remedy membership, guests can come in for unlimited cryo, they can enjoy 4 classes a month, $500 off their functional medicine, get one vitamin IV per month, and 4 technology-based treatments. Additionally, they can always bring a guest for free to enjoy cryo and also receive one free guest pass as well as 15% off everything on top of that (and more)!

ATN: What sets Remedy Place apart from its competitors?

JL: Making self-care social. We coined the term “Social-Self-Care.” You’re able to do everything in the club by yourself, but we would rather you do it with others. Remedy Place prioritizes human connection because we feel as though it is one of the most powerful forms of self-care.

We created the world’s first commercialized breathwork ice bath class. With that being said, I believe we are still the only place in the world that offers such a class. We can “remedy” any event, anywhere in the world. As the rise of demand for wellness continues so does its demand at every major gathering. Although it was never meant to be a main part of our business, it is now becoming an integral part of our business plan. From notable events like the Cannes Film Festival to Art Basel, to corporate outings, sporting events, partnering with private clubs and hotels, backstage for artists when they are on tour, to the Kardashians, Remedy Place is now leaving an impact way beyond the walls of our clubs. 

As the first to market and innovators of social wellness clubs, it is our priority to lead by example and teach and inspire others in this industry.
