The Big Apple is taking a bite out of AI-powered wellness experiences in lavish, members-only clubs

High-earning New Yorkers are expected to look increasingly well-rested, full of vitality and overall centered this summer as wellness brand Continuum opens its flagship location in New York City’s Greenwich Village, adding to the health and wellness landscape of the Big Apple.

Opening its doors in May, Continuum Club has a waitlist for those hoping to receive its white glove service and hyper-personalized offerings, including one-on-one personal training sessions, massages, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Himalayan salt saunas, cold plunge treatments, spacious workout zone and lounge areas.

The “intentionally exclusive” club was leased through September 2032, occupying a 25,000 square-foot space that was once home to David Barton Gym and, most recently, Peloton’s Tread Studio, according to The Real Deal.

Behind Continuum is its CEO and president Jeff Halevy, a former fitness tech entrepreneur and NBC’s “The Today Show” health correspondent.

AI-Infused Wellness

Unlike other luxury wellness clubs, the members-only Continuum is infusing advanced technology within its space, leveraging what Halevy says are “the most comprehensive physiological data sets, deep learning, and an expert team providing vertically integrated services” to deliver “ideal total wellness.”

Continuum Club clients receive a “bespoke wellness prescription” that the wellness company says is curated by its expert personnel and biometrically informed AI, which will adapt and adjust its recommendations over time.

“Our club in Greenwich Village was meticulously curated to both house the leading technology and services in the wellness space and to do so in a cohesive, intentional, luxury environment,” said Continuum’s Chief Revenue Officer Tom Wingert, a former marketing executive from Lululemon. “We’ve brought an extraordinary team of NYC-based artisans together to create a sanctuary in the heart of the city that celebrates the heritage of the neighborhood and deeply incorporates nature in a way that encourages serenity amidst busy city life. The space is truly one of one.”

Although Continuum plans to expand its physical presence by establishing new clubs, the luxury brand will roll out its AI-driven wellness app beyond its club locations so users can experience biometric analysis and personalized prescriptions wherever they are.

Wellness at Every Corner

The post-pandemic era certainly has resulted in a wellness boom in NYC. While Continuum plans to serve the Greenwich Village elite, Remedy Place, a social wellness club, opened in the Flatiron neighborhood in 2022.

Founded by Dr. Jonathan Leary, the “temptation and toxin-free” environment offers functional medicine, chiropractic movement, acupuncture, cupping, ice baths, infrared saunas and vitamin IV drips with an emphasis on socialization. Remedy Place also offers three different membership tiers, ranging from $350/month to $2,250/month, each offering guest passes. The wellness club also has a location in West Hollywood, California.

Also located in Flatiron is The Well, offering quarterly memberships for access to its social wellness experience that includes massage and skin health services, vitamin therapy, yoga and movement, Chinese medicine and acupuncture, vibrational energy healing and health coaching. Private events can also be booked at The Well, for corporate outings or a staycation. The Well also recently broke ground on The Well Bay Harbor Island, a wellness-focused condo and office space in Miami that rivals luxury residential concepts like Life Time Living.

While The Remedy Place and The Well offer club-level memberships, non-members can also experience a luxurious wellness session by booking a service of their choice, or head to one of NYC’s many communal bathhouses that have become all the rage.

The wellness club and members-only community is the latest in a recent upswing of premium, health-focused community spaces

Hume, a wellness club and members-only community created by Los Angeles-based Hume Projects, will open in early 2024, bringing together health and lifestyle facilities for consumers seeking balanced routines.

The club will include nutritional services, fitness classes and other recovery tools while encompassing a “bathhouse-like” atmosphere. Located in the heart of Venice Beach, the club will be close to the ocean and near other hospitality and co-working spaces like Great White, Gran Blanco and NeueHouse Venice.

“Hume was conceived in search of a more balanced lifestyle,” said Hume Co-Founders Roger Briggs and Sandy Bole. “We organized our social lives around healthy activities and wanted to create a modern environment to support those habits while fostering a sense of community and connection.”

“Pieces of what we desired were scattered throughout the world and enjoyed on special occasions but never readily available for our everyday routines,” Briggs and Bole added. “Through Hume, we have set out to build an intentional space devoid of distractions to unite these rituals.”

Hume’s new space, which was previously a Snap Inc. office, is 13,500 square feet and will include an expansive rooftop deck and lounge space for guests. It will feature custom equipment, natural materials and light.

Wellness Clubs Proliferate

Community wellness clubs have been on the rise. Concepts like Remedy Place have proven that some consumers are seeking social environments where health and wellness is prioritized.

The Well is one of the popular New York City wellness clubs. It describes itself as a club for “busy urban professionals” and houses a spa with a sauna, reflexology lounge, yoga and meditation studio, private training gym and more. It focuses on functional and Eastern medicine. Similarly, Remedy Place is marketed as a social wellness club. Designed to replace unhealthy social experiences (like drinking at bars) with activities like ice baths, the club is helping to shape a new definition of wellness.

Othership and Bathhouse are also new players putting a twist on pairing wellness and social experiences.

Hume is capitalizing on that trend through its new wellness club and members community. The club’s mission is a space to separate from daily distractions and stress through a holistic approach to wellness. Membership applications for Hume will open later this summer, and the club’s official opening will occur in early 2024.

The 2022 awards highlight the importance of fitness and wellness instructors, experiences, & studios following a tough few years for the industry

ClassPass announced its 2022 list of top U.S. studios and instructors last week. The winners are determined through a variety of methods, including using reservation data and social media nominations. The winning categories include the Innovator Award (introduced for the first time), Best Fitness Studio Award, Best Instructor Award, and Best Wellness Business Award.

The Innovator Award went to HAUM Yoga in San Francisco, CA, and Blueberry Moon Salon Spa in Chicago, IL. HAUM honors the rich history of yoga with a modern twist in San Francisco, offering Hatha, Vinyasa, Restore, and Flow + Restore. Every three months, HAUM has the “Art of Yoga” event that honors queer or bipoc artists. Blueberry Moon is a boutique and spa in Lincoln Park, Chicago, with a passion for cruelty-free beauty and a dedication to style and wellness. Most of their products are vegan, and they are dedicated to selling brands that are transparent about sourcing.

The ClassPass Best Fitness Studio Award 2022 had a variety of winners: MOXI3 in Costa Mesa, CA, High Ride Cycle in Orange County, CA, City Cycle in Seattle, WA, and SESSION Pilates in Dallas, TX. From strength classes to beat-based cycling, to a modern twist on Pilates, each studio offers something different to its clients. All the studios, however, are focused on creating a community, which keep their members coming back for more.

Best Instructor went to Allisa Benson at High Ride Cycle, Joe Stacy at Motion Fitness Studio, Kassem Osheroff at Burn 60, Ilana Brizel Maider at Prime Cycle and Body, and Tiffany Daenecke at Form50. All of the instructors have different areas of focus in the fitness and wellness space. However, they all try to be genuine, relatable, and inclusive as instructors, which has given them a dedicated following.

Lastly, Best Wellness Business went to Dop Dop Salon in New York, NY, THE WELL in New York, NY, Glow Sauna Studios in Dallas, TX, Blu Life Wellness in Escondido, CA, and WAX Melrose in Los Angeles, CA. From Dop Dop, which focuses on innovating hair care, to THE WELL, which is a complete ecosystem for wellness, to the saunas of Glow and Blu Life, to skin services at WAX, each studio offers something different. However, all the studios focus on getting personal with their clients and personalizing offerings.

ClassPass’s Best of Awards represent the studios and instructors invigorating and innovating the industry. Although all different, the awards represent the power of community and personalization in the world of health and wellness.
